Movement81's album ‘Strata' is out now through Petite Victory Collective.
Movement81’s second album, Strata, is a result of the duo's desire to work in a more philosophically nomadic way; to inhabit a smoother space and move beyond some of the structures, habits and routes that had become normalized within their practice. What emerged is a collection of tracks that tessellate between territories, momentarily finding form without settling the album comfortably into one place. Songs that remain recognizable as such, but are nevertheless categorized by the different spaces they have passed through.
Some of this categorisation comes from the human instinct to organise and make sense of what we are doing, but equally from a desire for music to communicate something. To be listened to, enjoyed, danced to or understood requires some movement towards the event horizon of Deleuze's 'Black Hole'. Across Strata, that pull becomes productive: rhythm, repetition and recognisable forms that provide points of connection while the music continually shifts around them.
The album consequently flirts with electronic genres without comfortably occupying any one of them in particular, with the artists’ own musical history repeatedly coding the compositions being written while interacting with the contemporaneous strata around it; abrasive synths, restless arps, tape-warped chords and insistent rhythms emerge, accumulate and recede as each track temporarily finds its own territory. Strata becomes fleetingly stratified, again and again, with each new organisation providing the conditions for another flight elsewhere.
The listener inevitably continues this process. Each track occupying a particular space according to the structures through which that individual understands it, attaching their own histories, genres and associations that temporarily locate it once more. Strata exists somewhere between all of these places: shaped by a desire to inhabit smooth space, but equally by the forms, tensions and moments of release that emerge each time it becomes categorised.
